One of the Air Zoom Pulse’s main goals, according to Nike, is to tackle the physical and mental challenges medical workers face on their feet. To do that, members of the Nike design team sat down with medical workers and learned the rigors of their day-to-day jobs for some on-the-ground product testing. Designers strove to make a shoe comfortable enough for long stretches of standing and versatile enough to support the fast movements required in certain emergencies. No statistical model is perfect, and it’s possible that runners who choose to wear Vaporfly or Next% shoes are somehow different from runners who do not. Regardless of the decisions that went into this model — even when trying to control for runners’ propensity to wear the shoes in the first place — the outputs were similar.
The latest in Nike’s React line of running shoes, the Phantom utilizes the company’s exceptionally soft and responsive React foam, just like its laced up sibling, the Epic React Flyknit 2 The difference, of course, is in the upper: The Phantom’s Flyknit upper is constructed with elastic yarns along the collar and tongue to flex with your foot, and non-elastic yarns in other areas to provide structure and support. There’s also a plastic heel clip to guide your foot, but the real draw here is the minimalist, sock-like fit.
The ZoomX foam found in the Vaporfly Next% (and in the Zoom Pegasus Turbo 2) ups the ante even more. Refined to save weight and increase softness, the foam is matched with a carbon fiber plate in the midsole. These two elements deliver 85 percent energy return and exceptional bounce at toe-off, which helps propel you forward. Sports medicine researchers and The New York Times backed up Nike’s claims, but the best proof is at the podium: In 2017, 19 top finishers in six major marathons wore Vaporflys, and Eliud Kipchoge wore a yet-to-be-released version during his historic sub-two hour marathon run in Vienna in October 2019.
The subset of fastest runners are those whose average time meets the 2018 time-qualifying standards for the New York marathon; fast runners are those whose average time is within 25 percent of those standards or faster; slower runners are those whose average time exceeds 25 percent above those standards. Enthusiastic runners are those with at least four completed marathons or four completed half marathons in the data. Logged training miles is the subset of runners who logged training miles in Strava in the four months before the race date.
